New importers often assume Thai FDA approval is only about medicines. The scope is much wider, and plenty of ordinary-looking products fall inside it.
Product groups the Thai FDA controls
- Food, including drinks, snacks, supplements, food additives and certain food-contact containers
- Medicines, both modern and traditional
- Cosmetics: creams, soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, fragrances and general skin products
- Medical devices, from rubber gloves and surgical masks up to blood pressure monitors and more complex equipment
- Household hazardous substances such as bathroom cleaners, domestic insecticides and disinfectants
The ones people never expect
These cause the most stuck shipments, because nobody budgeted time for them.
- Plastic bowls and containers intended for food
- Some categories of pet food
- Household cleaning products
- Sheet masks and beauty products bought for online resale
- Basic medical devices such as thermometers
The order to work in
- Check the tariff code first. The code is what tells you which agency's conditions are attached
- Identify which group the product falls into, because the steps and timelines differ sharply between them
- Register the premises before the product. In many groups you need a place licence first and product registration second. They are not the same application
- Ask the overseas manufacturer for documents early: certificate of free sale, formula, analysis results. This is usually the slowest part, because foreign factories are not used to the Thai document set
- File before the goods leave origin, not when they reach the port
Processing times vary widely by product type and by how complete the file is. Ask the Thai FDA or your service provider for current timeframes rather than planning around a figure from an article or from a different product category.
If you only find out at the port
Every remaining option is expensive: storage while you rush the paperwork with charges running daily, return to origin, or in the worst case destruction. That is why checking before you order always pays.
